This is a pleasant stroll which allows the walker to explore the area south of the Ribble taking in the lovely Black Bull in Old Langho. Although at just over 7 miles this is longer that was intended as a 'Short Walk', the walk can be shortened as required. Just a word of warning, the path alongside the Ribble going through Hacking Wood is a little rough in places.
The path starts at Lambing Clough Lane to the right of the Shireburn Arms. Just after the yard at Trough House look for the narrow path that leads to the new Dinckly suspension bridge over the Ribble. Turn left through the wood and then sharp right at the stone wall and so onto the private road. After about half mile turn left at the T-juction, walk by Moorgate Farm and onto Aspinalls. The path now becomes a grassy track for 80 yds, bear right at the double gate and cross the pasture. There is a fairly steep descent to the footbridge over the stream and then an ascent to the track alongside the holiday home complex. The path ends at the Black Bull. (60 min; 2.49 miles)
Turn left along the road for about half mile to the large sign for Brockhall Village. Carry on for 100 yds and look for the FP sign at the edge of the field. Take the right hand path, follow the hedge on the right and then bear left aiming for the 3 oak trees in the distance. The path now follows the field boundary on the right with views of Pendle. Towards the end of the hedge look for the stile. The path continues over a series of stiles to the road. Now follow the road to 'Hacking Hall Farm'. As the path approaches the farm look for the yellow capped waymarker on the right. Bear right across the field; the next stile is found over the wooden fence in the gap in the hedge. Cross the track, go over the stile, and continue to the Ribble at the confluence with the River Calder. (30 min; 1.29 miles)
The path now follows the Ribble to the stile at the entrance to Hacking Wood. This path is a bit rough in places but should not be a problem; the path emerges at the top end of the wood and turns sharp left to the farm track to Brockhall Farm. At the farm entrance look for the FP sign on the right. Instead of going straight across the field as directed it is perhaps better to follow the path on the left to the house and then turn sharp right to meet the stone stile at the field corner. The path descends into a wooded glade and soon meets with the Blackburn Rovers Sports complex. Continue to the road. (50 min; 1.41 miles)
Cross the road and look for the narrow footpath which leads down to a footbridge over the beck. Take the right hand path and walk up to the derelict barn. Shortly after turn sharp left and then after 100 yds sharp right. After a short while (300 yds) turn left along the road at the cottages and look for the stile on the right. The path now goes over pasture and eventually meets the wood. Look for the final stile on the left and follow the edge of the wood. The path finally leads the walker back on the private road. Turn right and retrace the route back to Hurst Green. (50 min; 2.13 miles).
