A
circular walk from Ambleside to Troutbeck over Wansfelll
distance 7.02 miles : time 3 hr
This is an easy walk to navigate. From Ambleside there is initially
a gentle climb overlooking the town. Some stamina is then required
in the ascent to Wansfell Pike. Here there are panoramic views over
Windermere and the surrounding fells. Thereafter there is a steady
descent across grassy moorland to Nanny Lane and then on further
into Troutbeck. Two hostelries are available: The Mortal Man Hotel
and The Queen's Head Hotel. The latter is a 17th cent. coaching inn
offering open fires and a wide selection of local ales. The walk
back to Ambleside is straightforward. The path goes along Robin Lane
to High Skeighyll and then alongside Jenkin's Crag where a lovely
view of Windermere is seen. The walk ends as it began at the car
park in Ambleside.
The
walk starts at the rear of the car park. Turn left along Old
Lake Road and then right up Fisher Beck Lane. Turn left at
the top to find the track. A gentle climb now ensues alongside the stone wall with views over Ambleside. (A
start from the north side of Ambleside is possible alternative).
The two path meet at the stone steps leading up to Wansfell
Pike. This is quite a steep climb to the top. (65 min)
After
resting to admire the views continue over the stile bearing slightly
left. There is now a steady descent over grassy moorland to Nanny
Lane. Turn right along the lane and continue to the road. Turn
left for the Mortal Man or take the FP immediately on the right
and walk down to the A592. Turn left along the road for the Queen's
Head. (60 min)
From
the Queen's Head retrace the path along the A592 taking the second
FP on the right. Go straight through the footpath junction up
to the top road. Walk along the road to the Post Office and continue
along Robin Lane; the path is now straightforward to High Skeighyll.
(45 min)
Follow
the bridle way to Jenkin's Crag where there are beautiful views
over Windermere to be had. The path continues through pine woods
and emerges at Old Lake Road. Turn right for the car park. (35
min)
